Chances and Hard Work Bring Rewards!

Sometimes, life rewards curiosity and hard work.

I started my part-time job at Macy's awhile ago and was working in Women's Petites and Better Collections.  Because I couldn't find any shifts available in the clothing departments, I ended up only working a few hours there.

One day, I got a call from Human Resources asking me if I was available to pick up shifts as a Women's Shoe Department Cashier.  I wanted to work so decided to take up the offer out of curiosity.  I had tried my hand in clothes so why not try out shoes?  I really enjoy attempting new things.

When I started, I needed a lot of guidance but got into the swing of things rather quickly. There was only one problem: I can't sit still, no matter where I am, so when it slowed down, I started being a busybody.

In the clothing department, when there was ever downtime at the register, I would walk the floor and start organizing the racks, picking up clothes off the floor, asking customers if they needed any assistance, checking the fitting room for any clothes left behind, and sorting/returning clothes to the departments they belonged to. So, when I started working in the shoe department, even though I really only needed to sit at the register and ring up prices for the sales associates,  whenever it wasn't busy, I would walk the floor, making sure all customers were being helped and offered to find an associate if they needed a pair of shoes (as the ringer, I was not allowed to go back to the warehouse to find the shoes for the customers).  When all the customers were being assisted and trying on shoes, I would scan the floor for trash and tidy up the area.

The manager, who at the time I didn't realize was the supervisor in the area, really liked me and asked me if I could come in the next day.  She also asked also if I wanted to stay in Shoes, which would give me more flexible weekend hours (whenever I wanted to work, I'd be able to get it!) and also include commission with the base pay. I couldn't believe it and had to think about it before accepting.

All my life, I have always followed the principle that one should earnestly work hard at everything and never give in to idleness. I have always tried my best and knew when to stop and when to continue. This event showed me that working hard is rewarding.

So no matter what, always try! And it never hurts to smile to everyone you meet! :)

Happy Birthday, Dear Friend!

This week is the birthday of my boyfriend who has been with me for almost four years.  I am so happy that he has been with me for so long.  I drew a picture and got him several gifts such as Corso's cookies, an mp3 player (with a kickin' workout playlist), an armband for the mp3 player and then I baked him healthy banana nut protein muffins.

Below is the picture that I drew for him as well:

I am happy that he really liked his presents and hope to give more.  If anyone wants to know what is a good playlist for men (I did extensive research to make sure that the mp3 player would be decked out) or what the protein muffins are, I'll be happy to post the list and recipe!  Let me know!

Hope all of you have a great Monday!

Procrastination Woes

Nowadays, there are so many easy ways to be distracted that it's sometimes hard to get our work done.  It always starts with a simple phrase like "I'll start the assignment after I finish one more level on this game/episode of this TV show/cleaning my desk."  A few minutes become an hour (or hours) and next thing you know, you're scrambling to finish because the deadline is in an hour.

This is the Procrastination Trap.

Once you get started doing something, you have the tendency to continue it. Thankfully, this concept works both ways!  Once a person starts an assignment, the person is more likely to finish it.  Of course, overcoming the hurdle of beginning the work is hard when everyone has better things to do.  But if you finish the work well in advance of the deadline think of how stress-free you will be.

Last weekend, I was guilty of procrastinating and, on Sunday, I finally looked at what was due this week and realized there were five assignments due: one on Monday, one on Tuesday, one on Wednesday and two on Thursday.  (The funny thing is I also procrastinated on them while working on the blog post on 5 Good Habits to have.)

Needless to say, I decided to start on the assignments and let me say, the method works!  I convinced myself to start by saying to myself that I will let myself take a half hour break for every half hour I put in. I took the first step, found myself finishing Monday's assignment in the first half hour and decided to start Tuesday's.  It was a lot more challenging and I worked on the first half for two hours before taking a break and heading to bed.  It's because of this that I finished all my assignments a day in advance.  When things got too hard, I would even procrastinate by working on another one.  (The best thing is that all office hours are the day before the due date so I can ask when I was having trouble!)

After Wednesday,  I started relaxing and doing whatever I wanted because I finished everything I needed to do for the week.  There is always next week's list of to-dos but a break isn't bad.  I will just start earlier and dispel any procrastination woes before they have a chance to happen. :)

So, next time you have to get something done and find yourself procrastinating, reverse your thinking and take the first step.  It is well worth it.

5 Good Habits to Have for Time-Strapped College Students

Being a college student is hard.  You have to spend your time wisely if you want to succeed in various components of college life such as your academics, your social life and at work.  Having experienced (and still experiencing) the rush of the life of a commuter who wants to maintain a full schedule filled with classes, research, down times with friends and work, there are five good habits to develop that work really well and help me get through it all without too much stress.

1. Wake early.
There is never enough time in the day but by waking early, not only do you give yourself time to eat breakfast, check your emails, and finish any outstanding tasks from the night before, but you also give yourself time to relax instead of rushing and preparing yourself for success. Many times students wake 10-15 minutes before their first class and forget stuff like homework or pencil.  Think about it: a nice walk with a side trip to Starbucks or running like a maniac down a crowded street?

2. Plug out when working.
What I mean is stay out of social media.  When you're working on homework, it's easy to procrastinate by going on Facebook and Twitter and roaming the web for cool funny stuff but the homework will still be due the same day and time.  My motto is 30 minutes work, 3 minutes play which I enforce with a stopwatch. T
his helps me get myself through the work with breaks.  Once you start work, sometimes you find yourself immersed and you don't need breaks.  It's starting sometimes that keeps people away.

3. Keep a calendar handy.
In order to make sure you are available when asked, always have some sort of calendar available, whether it be a paper schedule or digital.  This not only lets you plan ahead to study and do work but also avoids the "oops! I forgot about that!" moment you might have without it.  Many college students now can easily pull up their class schedules from their college's website but it's better to develop one you can customize.  I recommend Google calendar or Jorte (an app I have on my Kindle which also lets you choose from several cute icons to represent my tasks).

4. Write or update a to-do list daily.
Aside from having a calendar, have a to-do list to prepare for the day.  When you write it down, you're more likely to do it.  The best time to prepare the list is either in the morning (habit 1!) or the night before.  Give yourself ten minutes every night to remember what needs to be done tomorrow.  If you have an agenda book or planner, you're in good shape!  Just a side note, it is also best to set assignment due dates a day before so that you have it done early and avoid the stress of running out of time to complete it.

5. Make use of all your time.
Every second is precious and shouldn't be wasted. but don't kill yourself trying to do everything and using every second for work.   There will always be time you can give to ad-hoc events (your buddies ask if you're down for lunch? Go for it!). What I mean by this is that you want to avoid doing nothing.  You should always be doing something.  Relaxing on the weekend is something but keep in mind how much time you can afford to spend relaxing if you have a bunch of homework due during the week.  Also, I recommend exercising for at least 30 minutes a day.  Don't think, just do.  Afterward, you will feel sharper and your mind will be clearer.

I hope this helped and for those who have other good habits for the time-strapped college student, feel free to leave a comment below!  Enjoy!
